As a child, I used to pretend to be a brontosaurus eating the “tiny trees” that are broccoli. Now, I know broccoli is one of the superfood veggies---the most beneficial vegetables out there!
Broccoli is from the family of cruciferous vegetables, vegetables high in sulforaphane (sulfur, hence that signature smell!), which also includes cabbages, brussel sprouts, and cauliflower. The name broccoli actually comes from the Italian word “broccolo”, which means “sprouted cabbage”! Packed full of goodness, broccoli is as high in vitamin C as an orange! It also contains beta-carotene, vitamins B1, B2, B3, B6, iron, magnesium, potassium, zinc, and vitamin K.
There are many ways to fix broccoli: steaming, roasting, stir-frying, even raw, that maximize the nutritional content of this awesome veg. It even has been studied and implicated in effective treatments of arthritis, cancer, blood pressure inequity, heart health (particularly when paired with diabetes!), and immune boosting.
Don’t like that stinky odor of broccoli? Eat broccoli sprouts! These little leaflets contain 20-50 times as many therapeutic compounds as the mature state does!
